Among the distinguishing features of New York architecture
are the majestic bridges that connect Manhattan to New Jersey and
to the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. The three suspension
bridges that span the East River and connect Manhattan to Brooklyn
are: the Brooklyn, the Manhattan, and the Williamsburg Bridges. These
are some of the signature sights of New York. The Queensboro,
or 59th-Street, Bridge (originally called Blackwell’s Island
Bridge), is a fabulous cantilever structure that connects Manhattan
to Long Island City, in Queens, and the George Washington Bridge
connects Manhattan to New Jersey. The Verazzano Bridge (one of
the longest spans in the world) links Brooklyn to Staten Island
at the entrance of New York harbor.
